Bringing nearly three decades of public sector experience, Janet Schorer has officially taken on the position of SafeWork NSW’s inaugural commissioner as of July 14.Following SafeWork NSW’s transition to a standalone regulator on July 1, as the new commissioner, Schorer will focus on policy, compliance, best practices, and meaningful engagement with workers, unions, businesses, and the Family and Injured Workers Support and Advisory Group (FISWAG).

Carpenter Terry Dunn suffered life-changing injuries, including a fractured skull, six broken ribs and a punctured lung when he fell through a doorway and into the pool at a work site in 2021.

A new 98-unit development will transform a vacant block of land adjacent to the Curtin Shops into a social and supported housing complex with an estimated construction cost of $46.5 million.

NSW

Consolidated Power Projects Australia Pty Ltd (CPP) has secured a position on Transgrid’s new multi-year Construction Services Panel Agreement (CSPA), strengthening its role in delivering high-voltage infrastructure across New South Wales. Under the panel arrangement, CPP will be invited to deliver key components of Transgrid’s transmission network expansion.

Three major arterial roads in Western Sydney have received a joint funding commitment of $2.24 billion from the Federal and New South Wales Governments to prepare for an anticipated airport boom.  

A 4,000 MWh battery, set to be Australia's largest, is proposed near Sydney to absorb excess solar energy and support coal plant replacement, pending federal and state approvals.

The Western Sydney Aerotropolis’s first private-sector master plan has been given the green light and is expected to create almost 12,500 jobs and attract major investment. The Ingham Property Group-led project will transform 184 hectares around Badgerys Creek Road in Bradfield into a dynamic hub of industry and innovation, attracting both local and global companies. 

QLD

Toowoomba Regional Council has advised it has received a key development approval for the Cressbrook Dam Safety Improvement Project (CDSIP). Mayor, Geoff McDonald said the ERA16 approval was granted by the Queensland Government’s State Assessment Referral Agency.

The Residential Activation Fund will deliver $7.15 million to fully-fund the construction upgrade of Scrub Hill Road in Dundowran. The Government says this piece of trunk infrastructure will enable the development of 365 low-density residential lots over two housing estates – Sage Estate and Augustus/Oasis Estate.

Logan, a growing city in the Brisbane-Gold Coast corridor, will receive $135.98 million from Queensland’s $2-billion Residential Activation Fund to build a vital wastewater treatment plant, enabling continued housing development. Without it, Logan City Council warned it would be forced to halt new housing approvals due to infrastructure limits.

VIC

Fishermans Bend is Australia’s largest urban renewal project covering approximately 480 hectares in the heart of Melbourne. Fishermans Bend consists of five precincts across two municipalities – the City of Melbourne and the City of Port Phillip – and connects Melbourne's CBD to the bay.By 2055, it will be home to approximately 80,000 residents and provide employment for up to 80,000 people.

The 100-kilometre outer ring road is not high on the public’s radar, but the government has spent millions securing its path, and internal documents reveal it was urged to finish the first stage by 2031.

The largest precast concrete facility in Victoria will be ramping up its productivity to contribute to the construction of Melbourne’s Suburban Rail Loop East.The factory in Benalla is set to supply the concrete segments for SRL East’s twin tunnels, employing more than 75 workers and creating additional jobs in the supply chain.

Progress remains slow when it comes to creating a clear pathway for women into management and leadership in construction. The construction industry is evolving. With ongoing labour shortages, stricter compliance requirements and growing client expectations, the sector needs more capable leaders than ever before. Yet one of its greatest assets remains consistently underused: women in management and leadership roles.

Since the Federal election in May, the Albanese Government has focused intensely on the need to improve productivity to drive economic growth and push up real wages.
