🚨 Safety Updates

Excessive noise exposure is a common hazard on Queensland construction sites, and exposure to high noise levels can impair hearing, quality of life and reduce situational awareness, increasing the risk of accidents.

Thanh Dat, a 25-year-old Vietnamese man, became trapped beneath the forklift at a business on Powdrill Rd in Prestons, southwest Sydney, about 5.40am last Friday.

âś’ Headlines & Industry

As Queensland gears up for the 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games, the state faces a significant engineering skills shortage that threatens to impact the timely delivery of crucial infrastructure projects.

Australia's Clean Energy Finance Corporation invested a record $2.3 billion in renewable energy projects and grid infrastructure during the 2024-25 financial year, marking a 2.5-fold increase from the previous year as the country accelerates its transition from fossil fuels.

Construction and materials firms issued more profit warnings in the first half of this year than in the whole of 2024, research has revealed. A report by professional services firm EY-Parthenon found that listed companies in the sector publicly revised down their earnings expectations.

🏗️ Projects

NSW

The Temora Hospital Redevelopment is a step closer, with the NSW Government today announcing the appointment of a main works contractor. The $95 million redevelopment will deliver new health facilities and upgraded health services for Temora and the surrounding communities, ensuring residents can access high-quality care closer to home, now and into the future.

SA

Australian energy generating and retailing major AGL Energy has unveiled plans to build a 16-strong fleet of 700 kW / 1,828 kWh battery energy storage systems across South Australia as part of the state government’s emPowering SA community battery project.

Designs for a residential tower in Melbourne’s Docklands are currently on exhibition with the Victorian ministerial permits register.

WA

Construction has begun on a 30 turbine expansion to a wind farm north of Perth that will make it the biggest in the state with one of the world's most isolated grids. The $400 million expansion was confirmed in January by Bright Energy Investments, a joint venture between Synergy, Cbus Super and CVC DIF, with a $30 million contribution from the WA government as part of its $5.7 billion clean energy future investment.

The approval allows for expanded mining activities at Capricorn’s Bibra, Southern Corridor and Berwick open pits, construction and development of a new tailing storage facility, an additional run-of-mine pad, extensions to the southern waste dump, and construction works for an expanded processing plant.

The Western Australian government has announced a record $56.91 million in funding to deliver road safety upgrades at more than 100 sites across the state, marking the largest investment ever made through the State Black Spot and Safer Roads programs.

A Pilbara council will take on a $56 million bank loan to help a developer build a 116-unit apartment complex which drew strong opposition from the public.

🧰 Construction Au Other

Auckland-based Fletcher Building, which covers resource extraction, manufacturing, property development and construction across New Zealand and Australia, has announced that it is weighing up whether to sell its construction division and its Higgins, Brian Perry Civil and Fletcher Construction Major Projects business units.

🚀 Innovation, Digital & Futuristic Technology

Tasked with renewing 30 kilometres of wire, span by span across 96 transmission towers, the team turned to drones to thread the wire through each tower—allowing lineworkers to finish the job with traditional restringing techniques. Specifically designed for the industrial sector, STKS range blends certified protection with a modern, practical design for all-day comfort.

3D-printed geopolymer concrete (3DPGC) offers a sustainable, low-carbon alternative to traditional construction. It reduces labour, waste, and emissions while supporting Europe’s green goals. Though technical challenges remain—like curing methods and standardisation—collaboration among academia, industry, and governments is key to scaling this innovation for a circular, climate-resilient built environment.

In a recent EY (Ernst & Young) poll, we see half of tech executives say more than 50% of AI (artificial intelligence) deployment will be autonomous in their company in the next 24 months.

🌱 Sustainability & Environment

Protected species are increasingly reshaping construction worldwide, with legal and ecological pressures impacting project design, timelines, and costs. From bat tunnels in the UK to koala underpasses in Australia, and snow leopard corridors in Asia to whale-safe wind farms in North America—wildlife protection is now integral to infrastructure planning and delivery.

This year, Australia has experienced record-breaking floods, tropical cyclones, heatwaves on land and in the ocean, drought, coral bleaching, coastal erosion and devastating algal blooms. Over the past five years, insured losses from extreme events have risen to A$4.5 billion annually – more than double the 30-year average.
