THE MORNING PAPER FOR CONSTRUCTION PROFESSIONALS AND TRADIES

✒ Headlines & Industry

Australia will experience a boom over coming years that will see the value of construction work done on the nation’s buildings soar to record highs, new forecasts suggest.

🏗️ Projects

ACT

The National Trust ACT has blasted the draft EIS for Light Rail Stage 2B for paying lip service to the acknowledged damage the project will do to Canberra’s heritage. In its submission on the draft EIS, the National Trust laments how it identifies the project’s impacts on heritage values in the National Triangle, particularly on Commonwealth Avenue, but says little on how to lessen them.

NSW

NSW Premier Chris Minns announced plans to rezone Parramatta Road for construction of 8,000 new homes. The project aims to transform the corridor with higher-density residential developments, improved infrastructure, and streamlined approvals. Government and council promise coordinated planning to avoid past delays and ensure timely delivery of housing and amenities.

NSW has launched the Investment Delivery Authority to fast-track major construction projects worth $1B+, including data centres, renewables, and hotels. Backed by $17.7M, it will cut red tape, coordinate approvals, and accelerate up to $50B in development—boosting infrastructure, jobs, and productivity across the state through faster project delivery.

QLD

A $1.5 million dredging project and flood clean-up in early 2025 have not improved access to the Port Hinchinbrook marina.

WA

Australia is investing AU$12 billion over a decade to upgrade Henderson shipyard near Perth, transforming it into a key construction and maintenance hub for nuclear-powered submarines under the AUKUS pact. The project includes new high-security dry docks and shipbuilding facilities, supporting future submarine delivery and creating up to 10,000 jobs.

Featuring an intelligent CAN bus system for automatic load limit control, it combines high performance, compliance, and safety—setting a new standard in non-destructive digging technology in Australia.

🌱 Sustainability & Environment

The milestone trial saw recycled concrete aggregates from Boral’s Widemere recycling facility used as feedstock to capture and permanently store CO2 from the flue gas diverted from Berrima Cement Works’ operations into its recently commissioned recarbonation-based carbon capture and storage (CCS) pilot plant.

The Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) welcomes the release of Australia’s first National Climate Risk Assessment and National Adaptation Plan, which provide the strongest evidence yet of the challenges ahead – and the opportunities to act now.

🌏 Around the World

In the biggest and most advanced commercial project, Britain’s largest energy supplier Centrica will pair with the US reactor firm X-energy to build up to 12 advanced modular reactors in Hartlepool, announcing an investment that could create up to 2,500 jobs in the north-east of England.

📖 Miscellaneous

Australia’s new National Climate Adaptation Plan accepts 2–3°C warming is likely by 2100. With $3.6 billion already spent, it outlines resilient infrastructure upgrades, betterment policies, and private sector financing. However, it lacks detailed metrics, timelines, and proven action pathways—making it a solid start, but far from a complete construction-focused strategy.
