THE MORNING PAPER FOR CONSTRUCTION PROFESSIONALS AND TRADIES

🚨 Safety Updates

Construction workers remain at higher risk of suicide than other Australians, but new research shows the gap is narrowing as mental health initiatives gain momentum across the industry.

✒ Headlines & Industry

A federal government plan to slash skilled migration into Western Australia by about 30 per cent would stunt economic growth and slow the construction of homes amid a housing shortage, the state's premier says.

The 2025 Bill will overhaul Victoria’s construction payment laws, applying to new and existing contracts. Key changes include excluding the Christmas shutdown from business days, a 20-business-day payment cap, stricter rules for using performance security, and the removal of reference dates. Parties must review and update contracts to ensure compliance and avoid payment disputes under the new rules.

Twenty Australian projects will deliver 6.6GW of renewable energy by 2030 through the Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS). This $17 billion investment spans wind, solar, and storage, creating 12,000 construction jobs and 1,000 ongoing roles. CIS Tender 7 opens October 14, inviting new clean energy bids.

Willogoleche 2 Wind Farm, expanding South Australia’s Willogoleche site by 108MW, secured support under the Capacity Investment Scheme. ENGIE plans construction from late 2026, with commissioning in 2028. This expansion boosts renewable capacity, creates jobs, and strengthens regional energy resilience, advancing ENGIE’s 3GW Australia renewable goal by 2030.

WA

The Albanese Government is investing $6.5 million in Western Australia’s urban precincts. Armadale will receive $5 million for a new ‘Central Park’ near the train station, and Canning will get $1.5 million for the Rail to River precinct. These projects aim to boost connectivity, green space, and community vibrancy.

The Western Australian Planning Commission has unanimously approved plans to develop a $250 million, 14-storey building in West Perth for Hancock Prospecting, an Australian mining and agricultural company controlled by Australia’s richest person Gina Rinehart.

Western Australia’s $91.2 million clinker import circuit at Kwinana Bulk Terminal boosts freight and construction by speeding up unloading and easing port congestion. With a 40,000-tonne storage dome, it supports cement supply for major infrastructure, driving economic growth, job creation, and efficiency across the state’s booming construction sector.

🚀 Innovation, Digital & Futuristic Technology

A project manager tracks concrete pours with drones and laser scanners but still orders bolts by voicemail. It’s time to ditch outdated buying methods. Digital transformation—like direct ecommerce and real-time ordering—is revolutionizing construction, boosting efficiency, cutting downtime, and meeting today’s fast-paced, tech-savvy contractor demands. Australia’s spider-like robot, Charlotte, 3D prints eco-friendly homes in just 24 hours—matching 100 bricklayers’ work. Using recycled materials, it builds strong, sustainable structures quickly and affordably. With future plans for moon bases, Charlotte promises faster, greener housing solutions and could revolutionize construction worldwide.

Robotic technology company FBR Limited has announced the completion of Factory Acceptance Testing for its newest Hadrian construction robot at its premises in High Wycombe, Western Australia. According to FBR, the test involved the Hadrian building a structure consisting of 751 blocks, achieving an effective lay rate of more than 285 blocks per hour.

🌱 Sustainability & Environment

Australia is among the highest per capita greenhouse gas-emitting countries in the world, with buildings contributing approximately 25 per cent of the nation’s total emissions. To combat this, the National Construction Code (NCC) has implemented changes aimed at enhancing the efficiency of Australian buildings. In this regard, the built environment has cast its focus on natural ventilation and window automation, which are increasingly seen as essential strategies for improving energy performance and indoor air quality.

Generative AI is driving a surge in global data center construction, with $74bn in the US and €170bn in EMEA planned by 2025. While AI fuels US communication infrastructure growth, residential construction lags due to affordability and labor shortages. Europe sees housing rebound and German infrastructure investment, while China’s infrastructure offsets housing slumps amid rising costs globally.

🌏 Around the World

Since early 2025, Ukraine’s residential construction costs rose 10-25%, averaging 18%, driven by higher material, logistics, and wage expenses. Key increases include concrete (6%), cement (10%), bricks (9%), insulation (up to 25%), PVC windows (20%), and installation work (15-25%), impacted by supply and production challenges.

‘Opportunistic’: How tradies can curb spike in tool thefts More than 25,000 tools were stolen from Queensland tradesmen in the past year, but only a tiny fraction were returned to the owners unless tradies took this one simple step. In response to the rising trend, Queensland Police Service (QPS) has today launched a new crime prevention initiativ

Researchers are planning to turn seawater into hydrogen that can be used as fuel. The plan is to split seawater and store hydrogen safely on ships. Genuine H2 and researchers from Brunel University of London said that the hydrogen stored on ships can be burnt to power engines that will emit only steam. With this, they plan to turn water into power, delivering clean energy for ship transport.

The $2.2 trillion U.S. construction sector faces rising climate disasters, yet only 21% of high-risk areas have updated building codes. Fragmented, inaccessible codes slow resilient building. AI tools can streamline compliance, reduce costly delays, and boost safety. Open, clear codes are essential for faster, climate-ready construction nationwide.
