THE MORNING PAPER FOR CONSTRUCTION PROFESSIONALS AND TRADIES

✒ Headlines & Industry

CFMEU NSW will ramp up compliance checks across construction sites to combat sham contracting and underpayments. The move follows serious allegations against formwork company Future Form. Executive Officer Michael Crosby emphasized industry-wide reform, vowing prosecutions for non-compliance and calling on all stakeholders to help uphold safety and integrity.

The Australian government’s upcoming 2035 emissions target, aiming for a 65–75% cut, will significantly impact construction. Achieving this requires major investment—around A$500 billion—but offers long-term benefits like job growth, new green industries, and reduced climate risks, outweighing the initial costs for the construction sector.

Australian building permits for July fell sharply by 8.2%, a significant drop from the previous month’s increase of 12.2%. This represents a substantial decline of 20.4 percentage points, indicating a reversal in the construction sector’s activity.

Employees throughout Australia’s construction sector expect larger pay rises over the current financial year compared with those that employers intend to offer, new data shows.

🏗️ Projects

ACT

A new design for the 2.8 km Molonglo Parkway Drive Connector (MPDC) is needed due to a population surge in Molonglo Valley. Planned for completion by 2036, it will ease traffic, link the Town Centre to Tuggeranong Parkway, include river crossings, interchanges, and cycleways, and support freight access.

NSW

The NSW Government’s long-term vision to transform the State Library of NSW’s forecourt into a new 3,000 square metre public domain is one step closer with development approval by the City of Sydney Council.

The $3 billion promise would mean up to 1200 prisoners will have to be moved elsewhere for 12,000 new homes.

NT

APA Group received approval to build the 37km Sturt Plateau Pipeline in the Beetaloo Basin, connecting gas resources to market. Construction aims for early 2026 completion, marking a key step in advancing Australia’s energy future and unlocking the region’s resource potential. Watch the video below to learn more about this exciting new project.

QLD

The Queensland Government has announced it will deliver a new boating facility on Thursday Island, providing a critical link in Queensland’s ‘blue highway’ connecting remote communities across the Torres Strait.  The purpose-built recreational boating facility will replace the existing disused ramp and rock wall, providing safer and more reliable access for residents who rely on the waterways for school, medical appointments, cultural connections, and everyday transport.  The project, at Quarantine on Thursday Island, is funded through the $40 million Torres Strait Islands Maritime Infrastructure Program.

SA

Red Sky Energy received approval to build the KN2 well site at Killanoola, South Australia, boosting oil production and cash flow. Construction starts immediately, targeting a previously undrilled area identified by 3D seismic surveys. The project enhances operational efficiency, backed by a funding agreement covering 75% of drilling costs.

TAS

Marinus Link named TasVic Greenlink JV as preferred bidder to build network infrastructure for the $5 billion undersea cable linking Tasmania and mainland Australia. Final negotiations with DT Infrastructure and Samsung C&T JV continue for constructing converter stations and land cable works across Gippsland.

The Tasmanian Government has announced $2.3 million in funding for infrastructure projects aimed at strengthening the state’s waste and resource recovery sector.

VIC

Cladding Safety Victoria’s Clerk of Works program has identified over 1,600 hazards and delivered an estimated $96 million in quality and safety savings since 2021. Preventing costly future rectifications, it shows potential savings of up to seven times its cost, highlighting its value to Victoria’s construction industry.

Demolition begins at the former TAFE site in Coburg for The Avenue, a residential redevelopment with up to 275 apartments across four buildings, including build-to-rent housing. Designed by Hayball Architects, it features heritage brick reuse, sustainable construction, and a new public park, with construction bids due by end-2025.

WA

The WA government has unveiled Stage 1 of Heartwood Bentley, which is says is the first step in the major residential redevelopment of Bentley in Perth. The new Bentley Redevelopment Master Plan and Scheme will convert 21 hectares of government-owned land, which once was the site of the Brownlie Towers housing blocks before being demolished in 2019. There is also an old sand quarry on site that will be filled in. Once complete, the redevelopment will deliver up to 1,000 new homes, including a mix of medium-density, terrace-style and apartment housing.

Talison Lithium’s Greenbushes mine expansion in WA has passed the EPA’s initial environmental scoping. A 15-month assessment begins, including public consultation in early 2026. The project involves new waste rock landforms, dam expansions, water management upgrades, and road realignments, aiming to increase lithium concentrate and spodumene production

🧰 Construction Au Other

Components for seven wind turbines arrived at Geraldton Port, bound for Gold Fields’ St Ives Gold Mine in southeast Western Australia. The shipment includes over 2,000 tonnes of equipment with 80-meter blades weighing 24+ tonnes each, supporting the mine’s shift toward renewable energy.

🚀 Innovation, Digital & Futuristic Technology

Australia’s Halo kinetic sculpture is pioneering the end of traditional wind turbines by harnessing gyratory energy in urban settings. Combining art and engineering, Halo inspires innovative, space-efficient, and quieter turbine designs that could revolutionize renewable energy, especially where conventional turbines face challenges like noise, space limits, and wildlife impact.

A drone built by technology company ACSL has been adopted to Penta Ocean Construction's proprietary real-time receipt inspection system of soil volume loaded on a barge using a drone equipped with a 3D-lidar sensor and an LTE module.

🌱 Sustainability & Environment

Large old trees provide vital habitat features like hollows and dead limbs needed by 300+ Australian species. With these trees declining, “veteranisation”—artificially aging younger trees by creating hollows or adding structures—is being trialed to boost wildlife habitat. Protecting existing old trees remains crucial.

🌏 Around the World

India is accelerating its infrastructure development with a focus on mega-projects like bullet trains, shipbuilding yards, and access-controlled highways, aligning with the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision. The government aims to boost economic growth through infrastructure creation, encouraging public-private partnerships to moderate spending. Ministries are directed to expedite project approvals, with a high-level committee reevaluating goals for faster clearances.

The government’s proposed shake-up of New Zealand’s building consent system will be the biggest reform in the sector since 2004. Essentially, the changes will spread liability for building failures across all involved parties, reducing the potential risk faced by councils granting those consents.

📖 Miscellaneous

The Monash analysis figures showed Sydney was the seventh most overcrowded city in the country and was operating with just under 5 per cent more people than it should. Inadequate housing supply, transport facilities and clogged infrastructure mean one of the nation’s most popular destinations is overpopulated, a new study has revealed.

Early Fault Detection technology has been trialled in several Australian states but a national rollout is a long way off.

Green hydrogen is praised as a clean energy future but demands vast amounts of pure water—9 to 12 liters per kilo—posing risks in drought-stricken regions. Megaprojects in water-scarce areas like Chile, Namibia, and Saudi Arabia threaten local water supplies and deepen inequalities, sparking fears of “water colonialism.” Alternatives like seawater electrolysis and wastewater reuse offer hope, but water justice must guide the transition to avoid repeating historical resource plundering under green energy’s banner.
