🚨 Safety Updates
This safety alert warns of a serious incident involving the collapse of a cantilevered crane loading platform. It outlines potential contributing factors such as overloading and incorrect installation, and provides essential risk control measures for suppliers, installers, builders, and users to prevent recurrence while investigations into the cause continue.
A young worker was seriously injured after falling over two metres from a retaining wall at a construction site. Initial investigations suggest the worker was handing materials to a colleague on a higher level when the fall occurred. The exact cause remains unknown, and further investigation is ongoing.
Two workers suffered severe burns in a flash fire at a construction site while waterproofing a structure. Flammable vapours from the materials ignited, likely due to a heat gun. The temporary enclosure trapped the vapours, causing an explosion. Investigations are ongoing to confirm the exact cause and contributing factors.
✒ Headlines & Industry
The head of the WA branch of the CFMEU says the union has nothing to hide, amid an inquiry into alleged links between the construction industry and organised crime.
Engineers will play a vital role in the re-build post the severe flooding events that have devastated homes and key infrastructure across south-east Queensland and New South Wales. Engineers Australia CEO Dr Bronwyn Evans AM says it is crucial that qualified engineers are part of the flood rehabilitation.
🏗️ Projects
ACT
It’s still expected that construction will begin on light rail stage 2B sometime between mid-2027 and mid-2029. Photo: ACT Government. Light rail stage 2B’s construction timeframe remains as planned, but there’ll be a shorter window between when the final design is decided and when shovels are expected.
The Canberra Tradesmen’s Union Club has filed plans for a major redevelopment that would deliver 645 apartments on its site in Canberra. The proposal includes 5000sq m of commercial space and 4400sq m of new club facilities around a central public green space.
NSW
Seven key road corridors in Sydney’s south-west will be upgraded under a $65 million planning initiative to ease congestion, improve safety, and support housing and job growth. Jointly funded by state and federal governments, the project includes widening roads, adding intersections, and planning future infrastructure around Western Sydney Airport and Bradfield City.
Construction has started on the new City Campus Student Accommodation at the University of Newcastle, Australia, with a ground-breaking ceremony held at the Civic Lane and Worth Place site.
QLD
A development application proposes 52 residential lots in Precinct C of the Keperra Quarry site, covering 10.65ha. Designed by RPS Group, the project includes new roads, common property, and a Settlement Road intersection. Delivered over three stages, it supports connectivity and aligns with the approved Keperra Quarry Structure Plan.
Extra land at Brisbane’s Victoria Park has been heritage-listed for its cultural and historical value. However, this designation won’t halt the state government’s plan to build a stadium there for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The project will proceed despite the heritage status.
SA
A proposal for a student accommodation tower that would see the demolition of a creative precinct in Adelaide’s city centre, known as The Block, has been approved by the South Australian State Planning Commission.
Heidelberg Materials Australia has confirmed it has secured a major contract as part of South Australia’s largest infrastructure project.
The company has been awarded the Segmental Lining Concrete Supply contract, which will be integral to the tunnelling works with the final 10.5km of the North–South Corridor of the River Torrens to Darlington (T2D) project.
VIC
The Allan Labor Government is accelerating works to remove four level crossings and build a new Melton Station. From 6–14 September, buses will replace trains as crews demolish the old station and build rail and road bridges. Backed by a $650 million upgrade, the new station will open in 2026.
WA
Western Australia approved a 66 MW solar park with a 200 MW battery energy storage system near Collie. The project, by Enpowered Pty Ltd, covers 147 hectares and will connect to the grid via underground lines. It complements existing large battery projects in the region, boosting renewable energy capacity.

Manitowoc has launched the Potain MCT 105 H5 topless tower crane from its Pune, India factory. Offering a 5-tonne capacity with extended reach and compact transportability, it suits urban and emerging markets. Its shared components with the MCT 85 enhance versatility, while advanced hoist and trolley systems boost performance.
🚀 Innovation, Digital & Futuristic Technology
Lib Work, a construction company headquartered in Kumamoto Prefecture, has completed Japan’s first residential house produced with 3D printing using earth as the main material.
Plaster acts as an effective insulating layer for reinforced concrete beams, improving their fire resistance and structural integrity after uncontrolled fires.
Hitachi Energy rolled out its new mobile hydrogen fuel-cell generator recently at a live construction jobsite demonstration in which it charged one of its battery-electric excavators. The HyFlex generator replaced an equivalent diesel generator at a test site in the Netherlands. Hitachi says a 500-kilovolt-amperes (kVA) HyFlex can be a charging solution for remote jobsites, saving up to 800 tons of diesel fuel per year and reducing carbon-dioxide emissions by 2,900 tons.
A clean-tech start-up spun out of Oxford Brookes University has launched an AI-driven misting system designed to reduce harmful dust levels on construction and industrial sites.
🌏 Around the World
Acciona has received a new contract to refurbish the old cargo terminal building at John Paul II International Airport in Kraków, Poland.
Fyrtornet, a groundbreaking office tower in Malmö, Sweden, redefines sustainable architecture by soaring 169 feet without relying on a conventional concrete core, showcasing the innovative potential of timber construction.
India is set to massively expand its high-speed road network. The country will invest Rs 11 lakh crore to modernise infrastructure. This initiative aims to slash logistics costs. 17,000 kilometers of access-controlled roads will be added. These roads will allow speeds up to 120 kilometers per hour. The project is expected to be completed by 2033.

Alarmingly, construction companies once aligned with the union’s old guard are now implicated in serious crimes, revealing deep-rooted issues across the entire industry.
A Melbourne-based architect has been shortlisted within the top 100 entries in a global design competition to reimagine Dubai’s public spaces.
Organised by RTA and Buildner, the Dubai Urban Elements competition brief tasked entrants with developing unique designs for small-scale urban infrastructure, such as pedestrian and cycle bridges, street furniture, shading structures, wayfinding systems, lighting and other amenity elements, across the city’s seven zones.

The Western Australian Government has appointed a new deputy Chairperson to the Infrastructure WA (IWA) board. Dr Michael Schaper has been appointed to the role, and brings extensive experience in governance, regulatory oversight and public policy, having held senior roles including deputy chair of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, chair of the Gaming and Wagering Commission of WA, and chairperson of the Energy and Water Ombudsman WA.
